Chunky books are collaborative artists books filled with original art, dangly charms, ribbons, fibers, fold outs, pop-ups, mysteries and surprises. (I've seen them called "tactile baby books for grownups".) There are many online groups devoted to participation in these books.
The most common size is 4" by 4", and you may find books including anywhere from 15 to 60+ artists pages! The themes cover anything and everything you can think of. Rules vary from swap to swap, but chunky books are so popular now that you are likely to find a swap no matter the type of art or themes you are interested in.

Chunky Page-a-thon
I participated in the 1st "Chunky Page-a-thon" at ATCsforALL.com, October 10-12.
I wasn't sure how successful the "Chunky Page-a-thon" would be. I usually create pages in stages over several days/weeks ... not several pages in a weekend!
I started on my page backgrounds Friday evening and worked all day Saturday making chunky pages. I managed to complete 8 pages (6 to trade, 2 to keep). I ended up trading 8 pages, including my extra Vintage Halloween pages that I had been holding on to.
I really enjoyed myself and made some wonderful trades! I sure hope there is another Chunky Page-a-thon in the future.

I Want Candy
My pages for the "I Want Candy" chunky page swap feature a little wheel that changes the candy heart phrase in the window when you turn it. I used patterned papers for my backgrounds, and drew little characters for the fronts .. the phrases match the characters personalities. I made little "Sweetheart" dangly tags from the box tops, and used the "Valentine style" box backs for my page backs.

Face Your Fears
I created two types of pages for this swap at Nervousness.org (site now closed).
The first type is "Arachnophobia", which feature a little boy wrapped in spider webs with plently of spiders around.
Page elements include printed and handpainted papers, fibers, hand drawn boys with wiggly eyes, spider webbing and plastic spiders. |

The second type of page I created is "Public Restroom". These pages feature little latched stall doors, that swing open to reveal a disgusting facility. There is a bit of real toilet paper on the floor and of course, a "peeper" looking through a hole in the wall.
Page elements include printed and handpainted papers, fibers, brads, hand drawn toliets with glittery goop inside, and of course a bit of toilet paper.

Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet
I created mechanical Halloween themed pages for a swap at ATCsforALL.com. The main characters have a mechanical element: move the lever and the message changes from "Trick or Treat" to "Smell My Feet", and a foot pops out from under the costume.
Other elements include printed and handpainted papers, ribbons, fibers and shrink plastic charms.

Vintage Halloween
I created Vintage Halloween themed pages for a swap at ATCsforALL.com. I adapted some vintage images to create a jointed figure. The mask swings down to reveal a little girl. Other elements include printed and handpainted papers, ribbons, fibers and handmade beads.

I created this Africa themed page for a personal 1 on 1 swap at ATCsforALL.com. The mask is embossed aluminum, which has been painted with enamel and acrylics and is framed by glass beads. Other elements include cut letters, eyelets and fibers.
